Inspired by the existing range of Bert & May Kitchens, which are designed in collaboration with Red Deer architects, the commissioned piece is finished in a newly developed finish comprised of raw bronze sheeting wrapped over the entire island.
Bronze has been selected for its classical and hardwearing properties and for its stunning patina that deepens over time. Resistant to corrosion, bronze also lends itself perfectly to use in the tough environment of the kitchen.
Each surface element is hand wrapped in 1.5mm of solid phosphor bronze sheeting. This is then braised onto birch faced plywood carcasses that are hand made in London by a team of skilled craftsmen. The bronze work is then hand finished in London by local craftsmen who specialise in metalwork.
To ensure the material ages beautifully, the bronze is sealed with a hard wearing wax. The bronze withstands heat well and weathers naturally and as such can be used as a worktop finish as well as on the doors. The beauty of the Bert & May Bronze collection really comes to the fore when over time it takes on the traces of day to day use, adding to its wonderful patina.
