Our Bert & May story, aesthetic and DNA comes from a journal of reclaimed finds, discovered and reinvented to give the effortless look you see in our material today. The passion behind the brand is driven by a desire to help create fantastic spaces, which people love to look at but most importantly enjoy living in. Reclaimed materials are a key part of that toolkit.
Wood is a huge part of our aesthetic, we love reclaimed timber, the warmth, the knots of the wood, how it has aged and weathered over time. The different finishes and the natural variations add to the charm and it’s uniqueness. Wood is super tactile and holds the power to instantly change a space. It’s inviting and welcoming aura feels like a warm hug.
To curate a timeless look we combine new modern pieces with the old, the juxtaposition gives off a natural yet effortless feel. Each curated space has been crafted for you to love yet be durable and last for years; it’s important for us to create a timeless look and steer away from following temporary fads and trends.
This is often an overly used statement and a kin to fads in fashion, we however use this phrase to define the process whereby we find and source pieces, whether it’s cladding from a sun bleached barn or smoked oak timber from a weathered old building, these are one-off pieces which are not replicated once repurposed. The look and feel cannot be recreated; it is just that – limited.
We apply this philosophy to our kitchens. We have recently found something really special; it’s origin, an old mill. Random colours from layers of paint applied over the years. Greens, blacks and whites can be seen across the mix. The wood is treated so it is practical for kitchen use and then it’s handcrafted in to a high quality door front.
This particular batch will only ever make 6 kitchens. And once it’s been restored in our Yorkshire yard and re-homed we will be out there, wellies on traipsing across fields looking for dilapidated farm buildings to salvage and repurpose.
This kitchen at Holly’s house showcases this look, our reclaimed timber, warm, unique, the materials do all the talking in this homely kitchen. (will want to expand on this a little…)
All our reclaimed products are limited editions, our flooring is sourced in the same way. Our flooring comes in many shapes and sizes and as a genuine reclaimed floor you will be able to see the layers of use and wear over time, it’s the natural forming imperfections that will enhance the overall look of your floor and make it appear to have been laid for a 100 years. No two boards will ever be the same. The previous life of the timber can be seen and for us that’s its beauty. However, we are one of a handful of people who create reclaimed engineered flooring, with Bert & May timber you can expect the genuine look of reclaimed but with the practicality of modern day needs. It is easy to lay and works with new and old buildings alike, and with underfloor heating too.
