How many tiles will I need?
We recommend adding 10% extra on to your order to account for wastage. The exception to this rule is zellige, where we would recommend adding 15%. This additional % is called overage and you can adjust this % when using the tile calculator on this page.
If you have any questions about calculating overage, please contact design@bertandmay.com - being tile geeks, tiles + maths is a sweet spot for us!

Each tile features subtle variations in surface, texture and color, creating an organic look with depth & character
We make our Glazed Metro tiles by coating terracotta biscuits with a hand-mixed opaque glaze developed to match our colours.
We use the waterfall method of glazing in which a stream of glaze falls onto the tile as it passes by below on a conveyor belt. The result is a gently undulating surface, and slight variation in depth of colour in parts. Please note that due to the nature of the making process, a repeat is sometimes created in the glaze, and we therefore recommend your tiler selects tiles at random when installing. Obsessed with colour.
Our glazed tiles are made in a small workshop just outside Valencia, led by Raúl and his team. And because we are, unapologetically, tile geeks, we care deeply about what goes into making something that might, at first glance, seem very simple.
We insist on an undulating biscuit with softened edges and gentle variations across the surface of each tile. This causes the glaze to settle and pool in different ways, creating depth, movement and variation from one tile to the next.
We also insist on double firing. Each tile is saturated with glaze and fired in the kiln twice, creating a depth and richness of colour that a faster production process simply cannot replicate.
