Zellige Tiles

Zellige tiles evoke the historic artistry of Morocco and wider North Africa. It's their imperfections which make them beautiful, packed with flaws, chips, and unique character. Add rustic elegance to contemporary interiors or enhance a traditional, classic design. Browse below for Moroccan floor and wall tiles, book a design consultation, and order samples.

Artistically Crafted Zellige Tiles

To those that know the craft, zellige is not just a way of preparing handmade tiles. It's an art. Balancing the blend of local clays together with the pigments and glazes creates a truly unique, kind one-of-a-kind sculpture that adorns many a home in its native Morocco.

To make this kind of tile, unrefined clay is kneaded with water until it reaches the right consistency, then blended with pigments to achieve the desired colour. After that, they are moulded by hand and dried naturally in the sun before being fired, glazed, and then fired again. Because of this process, each zellige tile is completely unique in tone, texture, and shine, a classic example of Moroccan artistry.

Nowadays, the zellige tiles Morocco became known for have spread across the world, and help create serene, beautifully imperfect creations everywhere they're installed. This kind of changing appearance is the allure of the imperfect zellige, a reminder of the past when pristine, perfect tiles weren't seen. They've remained a classic for a reason.

Where can you use Zellige Tiles?

The process that these tiles go through to become individual works of art doesn't make them any less durable. In fact, Zellige tiles are tough and hard-wearing so are ideal for use both inside and outside the home. From stunning patios paired with other tiles to gorgeous, spa-like showers and wetroom tile compositions, they're a wonderful choice for those that want that Moroccan feel anywhere in the home.

Consider the natural tones and ombres that a collection of zellige tiles would bring to an entryway to the home. Soft pastel shades can make any space feel timeless, or embrace a moody, darker vibe with deep green hues.

Zellige Tile Shapes & Designs

Designing with Zellige will always leave a space looking unique. Whether you go for square tiles to make a classic floor with natural variations standing out as a feature, or opt for a herringbone tile design to mix things up, there's a lot of different options available.

You can also combine zellige with other materials for an even more stunning design. Why not try matching this artistic tile with the natural variations of marble tiles to give an opulent and effortless air to any room? The beautiful veins and flecks that mark every one of these pair wonderfully with the inherent variation that zellige brings to the table. Or, for those who love the Mediterranean, you could opt for a terracotta tile as a companion piece.
