From terracotta tiles made by master artisans in a dedicated workshop in Spain to reclaimed terracotta from France, our terracotta collections are authentic and timeless. These tiles provide a raw edge that’s perfect for a creating rustic finish but are also beautiful when juxtaposed with contemporary decor. Our terracotta comes in a range of sizes and tones, and we regularly source reclaimed terracotta from our travels.
Terracotta is a hard, earthenware clay with a coarse, porous finish. The word terracotta originates from the Italian for 'cooked earth', which is exactly how this popular material is made – the base clay is literally baked in an oven. Terracotta tiles are popular thanks to their hardy nature and warm colourways, which range from pale peach and earthy orange to deep reds and dusky browns.
Terracotta is incredibly durable, making it a sound investment and sensible choice for high traffic areas both in and outside the home. Terracotta tiles can be used on floors (terracotta floor tiles are suitable for use with underfloor heating), as well as on walls and in fireplaces – they’re incredibly flexible and lend their soft looks and hard-wearing qualities to many spaces. You can make terracotta tiles even tougher by sealing them so they become waterproof and resistant to stains and scratches, making them suitable for bathrooms, too.
We have two types of terracotta tiles at Bert & May – handmade terracotta tiles, and reclaimed terracotta tiles
Our handmade terracotta tiles are created in Spain by master artisans who use traditional techniques to hand sculpt then bake the clay in very large, fired ovens. With their natural charm and soft colour palette, these tiles add just the right amount of rustic to both interior and exterior areas.
Our reclaimed terracotta tiles are beautifully aged and totally unique. Sourced from all over Europe, often from the roofs of old buildings, each one is subtly different and offers a degree of colour and texture variation.
Naturally slip and scratch resistant, as well as incredibly hardy, terracotta floor tiles are a practical choice for high-traffic areas. You can use terracotta floor tiles with underfloor heating, making them ideal for kitchens and hallways, and they’re perfect for outdoor spaces, too.
Use terracotta tiles on walls to create a Mediterranean feel infused with real warmth and character. Terracotta kitchen wall tiles create a look that’s natural and easy going, while herringbone terracotta tiles used on a bedroom wall make a stunningly soft-but-industrial statement.
From pathways to patios, terracotta is a classic outdoor choice, and for good reason – it’s strong and hard wearing, while its naturally worn aesthetic and warm colour palette is the perfect partner to lush foliage and flowers. Use classic orange outdoor terracotta tiles against whitewashed walls for a sun-drenched holiday terrace feel, or add tones of green to soften deeper red-brown shades.
Terracotta tiles are suitable for floors, walls, fireplaces and splashbacks. They can be used in kitchens, bathrooms, bedrooms, and hallways, and are perfectly at home outside, too.
At Bert & May, we see terracotta as a core neutral as it’s so easy to live with and genuinely goes with everything. Thanks to its ‘unfinished finish’, it provides the perfect base to build on while its raw texture adds depth and intrigue to neutral interior schemes. In short, terracotta is a bit of a blank canvas, making terracotta tiles suitable for use with any colour you like!
