Terracotta Tiles
From terracotta tiles made by master artisans in a dedicated workshop in Spain to reclaimed terracotta from France, our collection is authentic and timeless. It provides a raw edge that’s perfect for creating a rustic finish in indoor and outdoor spaces but also looks beautiful when juxtaposed with contemporary design. Our terracotta wall and floor tiles come in a range of sizes and tones, and we regularly source reclaimed terracotta from our travels.

Why choose terracotta tiles?
Instantly recognisable, terracotta has been used in architecture all over Europe and Asia for thousands of years. Meaning "cooked earth" in Italian, terracotta is made from baked clay and comes in a range of warm, rich browns that vary from red to yellow toned. It is extremely durable and adorns much of the warmer parts of Europe, giving it a strong association with hot, sunny days by the Mediterranean Sea.
Terrcotta tiles are a fantastic choice for homes as the clay is extremely flexible to work with so you can easily customise it to your needs. It is also naturally very strong and can be sealed to make it water-resistant, therefore, perfect for roofs, wall tiles, and floor tiles. Long-lasting and naturally pigmented, terracotta tiles are one of the best options for busy areas of the house as they will keep their integrity and require little maintenance.

Our reclaimed terracotta tiles
Sourced from our travels in southern Europe, our reclaimed terracotta tiles are a stunning testament to the longevity of the material. Available in square, rectangular, and hexagonal, these reclaimed tiles bring a deep richness to any space with their varied texture. Each tile is uniquely aged, creating a gorgeous spectrum of shades from warm ochre, dusty grey, and the earthy red-brown that is so sought-after. Our guide to reclaimed tiles tells the love-story between Bert & May and these historic pieces, explaining how we carefully source these handcrafted tiles for you to use.

Using terracotta outdoors
From roofs to pathways to patios, terracotta is the classic choice for outdoor tiles and for good reason. Naturally strong and hard-wearing, terracotta is ideal for outside spaces that are exposed to the elements and can be strengthened with a sealant to make it waterproof.
As it is an organic material, terracotta brings a raw quality to outdoor spaces that complements the use of natural textures such as wood, stone, and greenery. Each handcrafted tile is full of individual tones, imperfections, and textures that come together to give a relaxed, artistic touch while not being too loud. Create an inviting space to socialise in your own oasis using terracotta zellige tiles.
How to pair handmade terracotta tiles
At Bert & May, we see terracotta as a core neutral as it’s so easy to live with and genuinely goes with everything. Thanks to its ‘unfinished finish’, it provides the perfect base to build on while its raw texture adds depth and intrigue to neutral interior schemes.
Contrast terracotta with refined marble tiles to get a sharp meeting of tones and textures that makes both materials pop. With its naturally warm undertone, we recommend pairing terracotta tiles with cool-toned patterns such as blue tiles or green tiles that will provide a striking focal point and highlight the beauty in both choices.
